I like a good wood-spirit birdhouse as much as the next person. (?) But the thought of a winged creature hopping into this old man's mouth is enough to trigger a gag reflex.

Just me?

Russian Criminal Tattoo Tshirts FTW

Says the seller:

"The cat has been a symbol in Russian criminal tattoo culture since the beginning, partly because the cat abides by its own rules. There are many variations of the cat tattoo. The cat symbolizes a thief that is good at what he does. This tattoo can show a man's or woman's connection with the criminal world. The word CAT or "KOT" (in Russian)is an acronym as are many other normal words that are tattooed. KOT stands for "Korenoi Obitatel' Tyurmi" or "Native occupant of Jail" as in Jail is my second home.

On the back of the shirt is a German eagle MIR logo. Contrary to popular belief this eagle has been around long before the Nazis seized power and was probably stolen by them from Indian symbols, just like the swastika. This eagle is one of my favorite symbols and it stands for strength and freedom and anti-authority. Translated from Russian it means: "Strike first, Dont wait for them to hit you!"

MIR is a Russian word for "world". But its an acronym for "Menya Ispravit Rastrel" meaning "Execution will Reform Me".

OK then.

Is it just me, or does this person know a lot about Russian criminal tattoos?

The Bomb

If you're like me, besides being a bit strange, you grew up with these rocket pops - or as the ice cream trucks in NYC used to call them, The Bomb.

Here are three handmade nods to the colors that actually really do run. Quite a bit.

Says the seller of the Miss Rocketpop softie: "Get one before they melt away!"

Happy 4th to all (whether you live here or not)!

The Uncozy Season: A Craftophile's Lament

Friends, it's no wonder I started this blog on a cold day in March (that would be 2009, for those of you who care). Yes, it was the height of cozy season here in NYC, a time when everyone longs to throw another sweater on the fire (did I get that idiom wrong?). Even inanimate objects seem to require outerwear.

It was in those heady, frigid days that Kraftomatic was born.

But now it's July.

What's a crafter to do when really no part of the body needs a sweater?

I bring you knitted earbud covers.

Instructables shows you how to knit your own.

And with that, I wish you a warm and fuzzy 4th.
